NASP Archery

HCS is a National Archery in the Schools Program School
In the Summer of 2019, HCS obtained the official indoor target archery equipment and curriculum used by the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) via a grant offered by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Indoor target archery is a safe, exciting sport that anyone can participate in, regardless of previous experience. Several of our teachers have participated in NASP Basic Archery Instructor (BAI) certification training and provide students with safety training, sportsmanship, and techniques toward achieving archery success. HCCD’s NASP participation began with a pilot group of 7th and 8th graders from HCS in the spring of 2022.
We are thrilled to offer the opportunity for HMS students to join us in expanding the program! We plan to continue growing our team, and hope to join tournaments in the future!
Who is Teaching Archery at HCS?
HCS staff members Chantal Avant, Janna Fisher, and Debbie Wiggins are our currently active NASP-Certified instructors.
They completed the Basic Archery Instructor certification (BAI-1) program in Summer of 2021. Additionally, Debbie Wiggins completed BAI Trainer (BAIT-2) certification in Summer of 2022, enabling her to provide the BAI-1 training to others. BAI Certification is required to provide archery instruction in schools, and teaches NASP procedures and curriculum, safety, and coaching strategies. Additionally, we have two HCS-connected parents who are BAI-1s.
Who is NASP Archery For?
Due to our small list of BAI-certified staff and limited space/time on campus, we are currently offering Archery to HCS and HMS students in 7th-8th grade, and participating students’ 6th grade siblings.
HCS/HMS students participating in NASP do not need to have any prior experience with archery, and all necessary equipment is provided! Our coaches look forward to growing NASP within our district, and expanding the reach of this spectacular program to more of our school family!
Is Archery a safe sport?
NASP has a perfect safety record. Safety is our priority, and built into the curriculum and practices of NASP.
We will spend a great deal of time learning the safety expectations of the range, how to hold and use the bow safely in order to avoid personal injury, range procedures to keep everyone safe, and techniques to build consistency and archery success. We will be using bows with draw weights adjustable from 10-20lbs, and we will work with students to identify a right- or left-eyed bow of appropriate draw weight. Students should wear closed-toed shoes and clothing that is comfortable (neither restrictive nor so loose/baggy as to be a distraction or get in their way while shooting). Students who wear glasses are encouraged to wear them while shooting. Neither arm guards nor archer’s gloves are necessary.

The Archery Way
As archers, we strive to shoot our personal best while competing with integrity.
Honesty is an expectation, sportsmanship and composure an obligation. We encourage others and understand our responsibility to self-officiate and protect the field with an overall goal of bringing the archery way into everyday life.
