Grade and Attendance Requirements for Student Athletes’ Eligibility
A student will not participate in after school sports for the day if excused from gym class due to illness. Students must attend school for at least one-half the school day to play in a game on the same day.
Requirements for Enrollment in After School Sports
- Signed Insurance Verification/Release form
- Signed Hickman Sports Policy and Competitors’ Contract
- Transportation to and from games and practices
Students must have at least a 2.0 G.P.A. and no more than one F on the specific trimester report card to tryout for a sport. NOTE: Students who attend 80% of summer school and satisfactorily complete both summer school courses (ELA and math) are eligible to try-out for the Fall sports even if their 3rd trimester report and G.P.A. was not at least a 2.0. However, grades will be checked for these students at the 1st trimester progress report; if the student’s G.P.A. falls below 2.0, then he/she will become ineligible to play on the Fall sports team.
Students can not have two or more “U’s” in behavior to be considered eligible to tryout for athletics.
Ineligibility Policy
Students’ grades will be checked every two weeks on a predetermined schedule by administration to evaluate a student’s continuing eligibility. If a student’s GPA falls below 2.0 or if a student has an F in more than one core subject (ELA, Mathematics, History, Science), then the student will be ineligible to suit up and play with the team in competitions. The student will remain ineligible until the next grade check. If the student meets the HMS requirements after two weeks of ineligibility, then the student can suit up and play with the team in competition again. It is up to the individual coach to let the ineligible player continue to practice with the team during the period of ineligibility. If a student is suspended from school, he/she cannot participate in practice or an athletic event that occurs on the day(s) of the suspension nor can the student attend the event.

Students’ eligibility to try out for a sport will be based on the prior trimester grade.
